I planted two sad-looking specimens in shallow, extremely well-drained soil (against the house where the basement had just been waterproofed). Within a year they'd sprung up, or rather out eight feet or so and were sending very long, heavily armed canes exploring off in various directions. I put up a trellis and attempted to coax them up the side of the house rather than across the driveway. This approach proved far too gentle. One summer we had both the driveway and the air conditioner worked on, and the rugosa was encroaching on both. Two separate bleeding workmen hacked it out of their way, and it's now beginning to look like the pictures! Very fragrant, very hardy, and very, very thorny.
