I just love this rose. Lovely upright shrub with intense maroon stems. Clusters of faintly scented 1.5" pale pink blossoms. The only negative thing I can say about this rose is that it is NOT self-cleaning; raggedy brown spent blossoms too high to reach just hang on forever looking disreputable. I love it anyway, and allow it to spread at will. [addendum, 2001: Murf finally bought us a long-handled pruning stick which will reach those spent blossoms, and I'm discovering that when those raggedy blossoms are hacked off regularly, this is a reliable repeat-bloomer!]
Martin Frobisher was the first of the Canadian Explorer Series roses. Lots more information is available about these wonderful roses at the Canadian Rose Society web site. One of many explorers searching for a Northwest Passage to the Orient, Sir Martin Frobisher was one of the first English explorers to sail the northeast North American coast. |
